Comics

I am interested in comics as both literature and as an educational tool.

As a creator, I write and edit comics for Dojo Graphics, a studio started by me and my husband, cartoonist Josh Neufeld. Dojo Graphics specializes in story development (both original content and adaptations) of comics in multiple mediums. As a separate-and-together team, we have created motion comics for television, film, and the Internet, for clients such as ABC and Lifetime.

As an educator, I am interested in the teaching of graphic novels to help students master new media skills and traditional language arts skills — as well as to empower them as culture creators in their own right.

As a consultant and editor, I aim to merge my knowledge of the educational market, my background in educational publishing and classroom teaching with my understanding and appreciation of comics as a form. In these areas, I offer professional development for teachers/administrators in incorporating comics into a traditional classroom curriculum through Teachers and Writers Collaborative and independently. As a consultant, I work with publishers and other industry professionals, as well as independent creators interested in reaching the educational market. My services include arriving at an overall assessment of your needs and coming up with a plan that suits your budget and vision. A plan may include lesson plans, curriculum guides, and outreach to the educational community.
